Even though i am a fan, it is still a very lazy anti athletic game where middle aged out of shape players can have success. ie david wells tony gwynn. the list goes on and on. Even though u have the occasional jose reyes who is an athlete in every sense of the word, he only plays a partial role in baseball strategy. I think if baseball is a sport then so should fishing and poker.

    Aren’t fishing and poker sports?

I for one can’t stand it! I would rather watch paint dry! Some Americans keep calling it “our national pastime.” NOT!!!! There are 300 million people in the USA, yet the not so world series can’t even get 10% of the population to watch. It sounds like a sport in decline, despite what its fans claim!!! European football-Soccer may never {SADLY} be #1 in the USA. But, baseball will never replace the NFL as #1 in America.

Let he who is without sin be the first to cast a stone…Have you ever watched batting practice? How about warm-ups? I can’t even stretch my body the way those supposed middle aged and out of shape men can! Pleeeeze! If you want to talk baseball make it worth our time. Yawn….zzzzzZZZZZZZ

golf is also a sport and there is a lot less action in it –just walking and standing around.
How should a sport be defined??

no baseball is a sport b/c u have to have some kind of skill and in baseball u hit run. trow the ball and u have to be in good shape and poker u just sit down and fishing well maybe

    Are you kidding me???
    1. Can you through a 90mph pitch?
    2. Can you hit a ball comming at you that fast? If so can you hit it nearly 400 feet for a homar?
    3. Can you catch a ball tag the runner at 3rd and through it to 1st fast enough and with enough accuracy for the double play?
    4. If it isn’t a homar can you steal 2nd fast enough without getting the 3rd out?
There are 9 innings in one game and 162 games played in 7 months. The same starters play almost all of that.
Baseball is great, it is as American as apple pie.

Have you tried to play baseball for 162 games, 6 times a week for six months? I went to a summer baseball camp once and after three weeks of baseball I was hurting all over, and I was 17 then. Football players are considered better athletes, but they play once a week for four months. How can you talk about fat baseball players when you’ve got 300 pound, fat eating, linemen on every football team?

Where have you been?? Fishing has been a sport for years and years now. You seem to define a “sport” as one played by young, athletic players. Not necessarily so. For example, golfers reach the age of 60 and are still competitive. You are way off re: baseball.
    Chow!!

if I have not played on my mens softball team for a few months and then go play 2 full games in 1 evening, the next morning my legs and body are extremely sore. Baseball is extremely athletic. Your examples are of players after there prime in low key hitting roles… They can no longer bunt to get on, chase down a fly ball, Steal a base… ALL of which tony gwynn could do in his prime… SO I suggest you go join a softball team and quickly realize YOU ARE OUT OF SHAPE and OUT OF TOUCH
When was the last time you played???

btw, fishing and poker r a sport in today’s modern idiotic world. Well, u need power to hit a ball 400 feet. u need speed to chase a ball in the gap. and u need to be healthy to do that atleast 162 times an year.

  11. nicole

well, fishing and poker are sports they are called anarobic sports meaning there is little to no exersice involved, and also baseball is an anarobic sport

Wow. Thats a really dumb question sorry. You obviously haven’y watched a game of baseball in you whole life. Fishing you sit there and wait for a bite the only skill is casting and poker you sit at a fricken table and put cards and chips on a table and I guess both those take a lot of athleticism (that was sarcasm if your brain didn’t pick that one up also).

It all depends on a person’s definition of a sport. Everyone has different interpretations. Personally, I think a sport should involve aerobic exercise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobic_exercise). Basically this means your heart should be beating faster than normal and you should be breathing faster than normal. This means you’re actually exercising.
I agree with the spirit of your question. I don’t think baseball should be considered a sport. However, baseball is a competition. And it also has a long history. It has more history than football and basketball. Everyone knows Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, etc. And that’s why its called the National Pastime. And because of its history and tradition, people still consider it a sport.

You say this but have you ever got on a mound and threw 100 pitches or played a game everyday for 6 months.I don’t think so!

  15. law138

One could say the same thing about golf…..but I’d like to see them try to walk 18 holes for four days straight and maintain solid swing mechanics. Certain sports require different kinds of physical endurance. A big part of athletic skill is hand / eye coordination…..hitting a pitch (solid) thrown from a major league pitcher is the hardest thing to do in all of sports, and I’d like to see someone who in “in shape” play 162 baseball games straight with all the traveling and only one or two days off a month.

The US needed to create some sports who can be played by anyone.
Many people think that the definition of a sport is anything that is athletic, but the real definition is anything that can be competitive.
This means that the following are sports:
    -poker
    -billiards
    -bowling
    -nascar
    -horse shoes
    -scrabble
    -jump roping
    -riflery
    -foosball
    -etc

Fishing and poker are sports. Baseball is America’s favorite pass time. Wait until your older, and remember that you should stop doing everything you love to do, and see how it feels Jerk!

  18. fugutast

OK, so you’re talking fat. Have you seen NFL lineman recently? You’re talking lazy. Have you watched soccer recently?
Hey, poker is televised on Sportnet here so, hard as it is to believe, it somehow has become a sport. Fishing too.
What can I say, I love baseball and I love the fact baseball has had its fatsos like Babe Ruth, Mickey Lolich, Boog Powell and the tubbies you mentioned. Sorry, but track and field is a sport where athletes are in great shape and it’s snoozeville for me to watch running esp. a marathon.

they are sports! baseballs fun i hate football and basketball, because its being taken over by the black community and they suck, they dont care for the game they want the fame and only the fame! and golf is way more boring than baseball!!!
