The Soul Of Healing Meditations

Posted on 14 Jun 2010 at 6:24pm

Amazon.com

Featuring the soothing narration of Deepak Chopra over the trancelike music of Adam Plack, The Soul of Healing Meditations serves as an introduction to meditation for neophytes and as a more advanced tool to help overcome a physical ailment and/or emotional toxicity. That may make it sound like a digital elixir, but as Chopra says in his liner notes: “We like to tell our patients (at the Chopra Center for Well Being) that the body is the best pharmacy in the world and is capable of making wonder drugs.” His message here is that one can naturally prevail over serious life challenges by becoming more attuned to one’s body–by relaxing and filtering out the external world, focusing on and influencing internal sensations and biorhythms, and banishing negative thoughts and focusing on the positive aspects of life. This CD is not meant as a cure-all for physical or emotional ills. Rather, it’s a supplemental experience to other treatments or programs, and it shows how enlightening and empowering meditation can be when practiced properly. Its actual effects will depend upon the receptiveness of the listener. Plack’s accompanying soundtrack ranges from delicate ambient tones to more active Indian music, appropriately serving the mood of each of the album’s eight tracks. –Bryan Reesman

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga: A Practical Guide to Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit

Posted on 01 Jun 2010 at 8:25pm

From Publishers Weekly

“Just as no one would argue that gravity applies only to England because Sir Isaac Newton was British or that Einstein’s theory of relativity was relevant only in Germany… the principles of yoga are not limited by time or space,” say Chopra, author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, and Simon, medical director for the Chopra Center. Their guide is written in such a clear, sensible way that those new to yoga will wonder why they’ve not tried it before. Seasoned practitioners will find themselves reinvigorated and may learn a new breathing technique or meditation. Starting with descriptions of the two most popular frameworks, Shankara and Patanjali, the authors then list the seven laws of spirituality that neatly correspond to the seven days of the week. Extensive explanations of several types of meditation—chakra, so hum breath technique, awareness, attention/intention—are followed by the most common breathing exercises and thorough instructions for a variety of asanas (poses). Photographs complete the instructional portion of the book, making it especially useful for beginners. The final pages bring the program together with a suggested routine that combines all of the above into a perfect blend of theory and practice.

Review

While most current guides focus on yoga’s asana (physical practice), this concise book emphasizes its spiritual aspects. Chopra (Ageless Body, Timeless Mind) and Simon (medical director, Chopra Ctr.) are both pioneers in the field of holistic health, having mixed Western medicine with natural Eastern hearing traditions.  They lucidly explain the complexities of Vedic science and discuss how to apply its spiritual aspects to a yoga routine. Their overriding message is that if practitioners combine the components of a good yoga practice – breathing, meditation, postures (illustrated with photographs), bandhas (means of breath control), and Chopra’s seven spiritual laws, they are promised physical, emotional, and spiritual rewards. Good for both beginners and advances students, this is an excellent choice for most yoga collections. (Library Journal, July 2004)

The Deeper Wound: Recovering the Soul from Fear and Suffering, 100 Days of Healing

Posted on 19 Sep 2009 at 2:26am

Product Description
The author of How to Know God provides help for healing deep trauma—whenever it arises—so we may find peace in ourselves and in our world.

Terror came from the sky, and afterward the world would never be the same. September, 11, 2001, defined tragedy for a generation. On that day Deepak Chopra found himself driving from city to city, meeting thousands of people who begged for meaning and solace in the face of suffering. In response he has written The Deeper Wound, offering a way of healing as a memorial to the thousands of victims who perished.

The opening section, “In the Face of Tragedy,” defines suffering as the pain that threatens to make life meaningless. When our deepest needs go unfulfilled, suffering begins. We begin to heal when we go beyond personal anger and fear to a realization of our true self, the self that was never afraid and can never be wounded.

The true self contains the light that no darkness can attack. Having described a path of awareness and compassion that leads to the light, the second half of The Deeper Wound takes us there through “A Hundred Days of Healing,” daily affirmations, exercises, insights, lessons, and questions—each a step out of pain toward a higher reality. “We can become living memorials to tragedy by restoring the power of life,” writes Deepak Chopra. “You are that life, you are that power. Let us see if we can find the spark that will make the spiritual flame spring up.”

Healing yourself comes in two stages—first releasing the energy of suffering, then replacing it with the soul’s energy. It is a gentle and fragile path, very much like holding on to a thread as it leads you from step to step.

If you take the time to listen to the voice of silence, you will be astonished at the power you have at your command, however long that power has been overlooked.

A portion of the proceeds earned by the author and publisher from the sale of this book will be donated to the Red Cross to aid in humanitarian relief efforts around the world.
